In the history of the Batlló house There were different owners. The architect house Batlló was Emilio Sala Cortés (Professor of the school of architecture of Barcelona and He was one of Gaudí's teachers). In 1903 the building It was acquired by the industrialist Josep Batlló i Casanovas, a wealthy businessman who owned several factories textiles in Barcelona .

He was married to Amàlia Godó i Belaunzarán, from the of the counts of Godó, editors of the newspaper La Vanguardia, with whom he had five children. The couple lived in the plant nobleman of the house until the death of both (in 1934 Mr. Batlló and in 1940 his wife), which was sold in 1954 by his children, installed in turn in other apartments, some of which they have been inhabited until today.

Batlló bought the building for 510,000 pesetas, with the first intention of tearing it down and building one new, although later he settled for reforming it and giving his touch particular to the interior design of the house. while he reserved the main plant, the rest was exploited under a rent, as was customary in the bourgeois houses of the time (although also he gave some floors to his children as they were getting married).

The building was located in the heart of the Ensanche de Barcelona , designed by Ildefonso Cerdá and approved in 1859, with a system reticular of blocks of houses with cut corners, with the forecast of building on two sides and dedicating the rest to gardens, this last point that finally was not carried out. Gaudi's project suffered several modifications from its conception to its final realization, due to the continuous search for the best solutions structures by the architect .

In the first draft, he showed an initial intention to crown the building with a sinuous shaped dome irregular, which eventually became a dragon-shaped vault , which it is the main hallmark of the building. Likewise, the tower with the four-armed cross that tops the roof was planned on the left side of the roof, but Gaudí moved it towards the center so that it would not interfere with the stepped top of the adjacent Casa Amatller , showing great respect for the work of his colleague Puig i Cadafalch.

In 1940 Casa Batlló passed as an inheritance to the daughters of the Batlló-Godó couple (Carmen and Mercedes), the which sold it in 1954 to Seguros Iberia, which installed there their business offices. In 1984 the lighting was installed electricity of the façade, inaugurated in the Festivals of the Mercè of that year.
