Sustainable rehabilitation of the Palace of San Cristobal

Sustainable rehabilitation of a Palace of the 18th century.

In this post we will talk about the project of rehabilitation of a palace house built during the century XVIII located in the Salcedo Valley, about thirty kilometers west of Bilbao, which is was in very poor condition, with the objective of allocate it to a residential building of six houses . This intervention is carried out on the basis to action guidelines with intervention criteria of maximum energy efficiency and stand out above all the actions in the field of bioclimatic design passive , by improving its envelope temperature and its ventilation conditions. like in the incorporation of renewable energy and installation state-of-the-art efficient heating systems for be able to obtain the best qualification, which allows you to reach the letter A.

The performance was projected from the beginning focused on obtain maximum energy savings, applying strategies of passive design that allowed to reduce the demand to the maximum its energy, with efficient installations that to reduce their energy consumption and emissions CO2 to minimize environmental impact. highlighting the importance of it since it obtained the third prize of the I Edition of the International Urban Buildings Competition Sostenibles 2013 , organized by Construction21 and Metropolitan Solutions .

Program of Needs.

A complete rehabilitation of it was carried out to allocate it to a residential building, so that it Two houses per floor were projected, obtaining six houses on three floors and two houses under cover. In each house there was a program of needs with a living room, a kitchen, a hall, two bedrooms and a bathroom bathroom.

Intervention in the enveloping.

It has been intervened in order to improve considerably its thermal insulation, so that it has been used laminated wood of 14 cm. thick so that has reached a transmittance value U= 0.24 w/m2k . It has been reinforced the thermal insulation of the facades and installed PVC exterior carpentry, with profiles of REHAU Euro-Design 70 window and double insulating glass with air chamber. Ventilation is also provided. crossed to limit their energy demands.

Systems of facilities.

To supply the demands for heating and hot water Sanitary of the building, it has a pump geothermal heat high power geoTHERM, of so that a total of four vertical wells of 130 m deep.

This installation also has underfloor heating and twelve Vaillant brand thermal solar collectors arranged in three batteries of four collectors, with a 500 liter tank. Underfloor heating allows the use of water at a temperature of 36ºC so that a energy savings of the order of 15º in relation to other radiant systems.

The underfloor heating is configured as a system efficient that allows significant energy savings , due to the result of the use of low temperatures of drive that manage to distribute the heat evenly and homogeneous in the rooms where it is demanded. this ground allows a quite effective, efficient and respectful with the environment, so that the system construction used in the execution of said system presents the following advantages:

Energy savings achieved:

Through the air conditioning system geothermal used by means of the heat pump is achieve energy savings that reach 75% of energy , also by means of energy obtained in a way that will allow the generation of both heating as domestic hot water.
