Project SymbCity House high energy efficiency and sustainable

Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 Competition. Project SymbCity House.

In this post we will discuss some of the most important aspects highlights of the SymbCity House, project presented by the Plateau Team in the university contest known as Solar Decathlon Europe to evaluate the construction of high-rise housing prototypes energy efficiency and sustainability, in which the juries will evaluate and score each proposal through ten tests to be carried out in situ to verify in which extent the proposed objectives are achieved, so that the final phase will take place during the month of June in Versailles.

The SymbCity House initiative has been forged around to the current city due to the continuous growth of the cities and its continuous expansion in recent years, and that constitutes the main challenge that must be faced both in Spain as in the rest of the European countries, so that with the It is intended to implement or create a new urban model based on the called compact city or complex as a form of sustainable city that takes advantage of to the maximum of their own resources.

Some notable aspects of the initiativeSymbCity House:

The aim is to generate an eco-efficient city Through the development and implementation of a model of sustainable and environmentally friendly urban growth environment, about the current city model that is characterized by presenting inefficient buildings or sustainable and waste or lose large amounts of energy.

The aim is to improve the urban context in our country, in such a way that the objective of the action to those areas with buildings of greater poverty that have older homes and that require of a new conditioning to improve its efficiency energy, given its current precariousness in this regard.

To achieve this objective, in a way that allows this integration between the existing building and the new home efficient, a symbiosis is generated that seeks to solve the problems that present these urban nuclei at present, through the creation of high-quality housing modules efficiency that would be incorporated by attaching them to the roof of these current buildings.

In this way it is intended to act to achieve a complete transformation of cities that allows carrying out said change through this implantation of new houses on the current ones, and that may imply the change towards a new more sustainable city model, which requires the execution of a higher level in buildings that could be used for different uses, not only for homes but also for house any local type for another use or for any installation.

The financing of said project could be carried out by average of the income obtained through the sale of such homes, premises or spaces, thus allowing the viability economics of the project that revolves around a benefit between both houses, the existing ones also called host homes and new ones, or homes guest.

The new homes to be built will be almost zero energy consumption, and the rest of the existing building will achieve at least a high energy rating B.

Characteristics of the new home host:

The project proposes that their structure be perform independently of the current building on the one that is supported, using organic materials in the same as wood.

This new structural system is generated by increasing one meter to the outside for each facade of the host building, so that a new envelope is created with a new skin or façade that will leave an air chamber that allows to store heat in winter and reduce the energy demand of heating.

The houses of the new plant that is generated on the roof they will be found hanging from a structure of wooden braces without supports, which will transmit all the loads directly to the ground, and therefore will not generate overload on the current building, an important aspect given that if not in some cases its execution would not be viable.

According to the housing model or prototype standard, three parts or zones will be generated different in each of them, with a main room in which includes day rooms, such as the dining room, living room and bedroom, an intermediate space corresponding to a multifunctional room that acts as a patio or conservatory and an area called technical block where they locate the humid places of the house.

Materials of its envelope and facilities:

This is a "typical" dwelling that will consist of a envelope resolved by wood panels with a core of mineral wool insulation, 18 cm total thickness, great thermal and acoustic performance, These panels will be used both for the façade and for the other horizontal elements or covers.

All the materials used in the construction of the houses will be respectful with the environment during all their useful life, and regarding the facilities will present heating and air conditioning through the incorporation of a low-temperature radiant ceiling, and will have monitoring equipment to be able to take advantage of to the maximum of outdoor weather conditions.
